Dr. George Demosthenous Head of the Department

Dr. George
Demosthenous is
an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering
at Frederick Institute of
Technology. He is the
Supervisor of the Mechanical Engineering Programme of Study (BSc/4
Years/System of Credits) and the Co-ordinator of the Mechanical
Engineering Programmes of Study. He joined the Faculty of Engineering
in 1996. Prior
to this appointment he was Research Associate and Teaching Assistant
(1989-1996) at the Mechanical Engineering Department of the National
Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and part-time Lecturer (1990-1995)
at the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Pireus Technological
Educational Institute. He
received the Dipl.-Eng. degree in Mechanical Engineering (1989) and the
Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering (1996) from the National Technical
University of Athens. He is a member of the Technical Chamber of Cyprus (ETEK), the American
Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Institution of Mechanical
Engineers of UK (ImechE), the Society of Manufacturing Engineering (SME),
the Society of Automotive Engineering (SAE) and the Cyprus Professional
Engineer Association. He
is the coordinator of various funded research projects. He has over 30
scientific publications in refereed Journals and International
Conferences. In
addition, he is a co-author of a scientific monograph entitled
“Crashworthy Characteristics of Composite Thin-Walled Structural
Components” and of an undergraduate textbook in Manufacturing
Technology. His research interests are in the area of Forming and Machining Processes, Mechanics of Composite Materials, Impact Engineering, Roadside Safety, Automotive Crashworthiness, Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis.
