Research Interests

Antonis's research expertise lies in the areas of instrumentation and load testing of bridges, structural concrete design and testing, long term monitoring of structures in the field, repair/strengthening of wood structures with fiber reinforced polymers (FRP), instrumentation and testing of wood structures, characterization and testing of FRP materials, repair/strengthening of concrete structures with FRP and new reinforcement materials for structural concrete.

While working at the Advanced Engineered Wood Composites Center of the University of Maine, Antonis developed and tested a repair/strengthening method for old wood piles using FRP materials that has been commercialized in the United States. As part of his work Antonis inspected several old wood marine structures, assessed their structural condition and reported on the need for repairs and/or strengthening.

At the University of Florida, Antonis worked closely with the Florida Department of Tranportation Structures Research Center on several projects. His research projects included assessment of structural condition, repair/rehabilitation and non destructive evaluation of old and new bridges. Antonis was also involved in projects that dealt with the repair/strengthening of masonry structures with the use of FRP composites. At the University of Florida Antonis lead the way in developing a concrete pile reinforced only with carbon fiber materials that could replace prestressed piles in foundation systems in bridges and other coastal structures. Antonisís work at Florida attracted the interest of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Private companies are currently working towards producing a commercial product based on Antonisís work.

Teaching

Antonis has taught undergraduate courses in the field of engineering materials, structural analysis, reinforced and pre-stressed concrete design, steel structures design, highway engineering and pavement design and measurement and costing of construction works.
